How to Crochet a Balaclava with Granny Squares.
The balaclava, now an essential accessory for the cold seasons, turns into a work of art thanks to the crochet technique! In this article, I will explain how to make a balaclava using eight granny squares, just like the one shown in the picture. Perfect for those who love handmade creations with a retro touch, this project combines tradition and modernity in a versatile and fashionable accessory.
Necessary Materials
- Yarn: Three different colors of your choice. You can take inspiration from burgundy, white, and pink tones, or choose your favorite combination.
- Crochet hook: Suitable for the yarn you will use (e.g., 3.5 mm or 4 mm).
- Darning needle to sew the squares together and hide the threads.
- Scissors.
- Measuring tape to check the final dimensions.

Step 1: Making the Squares
You will need 8 identical squares for the balaclava.
Follow the detailed tutorial for the granny square:
- First round (center color): Work 4 groups of 3 double crochet stitches, separated by 2 chains, into a magic ring.
- Second round: Change color and create corners by working (3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) in each space.
- Third round: Work (3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) in the corners and 3 double crochet stitches in the side spaces.
- Fourth and fifth rounds: Continue with the final color, increasing on the sides and in the corners as in the previous rounds.
Repeat until you have eight identical squares.
Step 2: Assembly
Once the eight squares are ready, proceed with the assembly to form the balaclava. You can sew them together or join them with a slip stitch using your crochet hook.
Layout:
- Front and back: Join 4 squares to form the front and back of the balaclava.
- Sides: Sew the top and bottom squares together to close the hood.
- Base: Leave it open for easy wearing.
Joining with Crochet:
You can join the squares with a slip stitch along the edges. This creates a decorative and sturdy border. If you prefer an invisible finish, use a darning needle and a hidden stitch.
Step 3: Finishing Touches
For a final touch:
- Work a single crochet border around the face and base for a more polished look and better fit.
- If you prefer a tighter fit, add an adjustable tie or a cord made with chain stitches.
Ideas to Personalize Your Balaclava
- Colors: Experiment with vibrant tones for a modern effect, or use neutral colors for an elegant look.
- Glitter or fuzzy yarn: If you love a glamorous touch, try incorporating yarn with special effects.
- Applications: Add pom-poms or crochet flowers for extra personalization.
The balaclava made with granny squares is not just a practical winter accessory but also a statement of style and creativity. Each piece is unique, just like you! This project will not only keep you warm but also let you proudly showcase your crochet skills.
